At least this time, all we brought was bad weather
We seem to have a better-than-average track record of bringing illness with us and sharing very nicely when we visit the Ottawa-Cornwall area. This time, we just brought freezing rain. We visited this past weekend (Nathan is working a compressed schedule now where he works an extra 1/2 hour a day and gets every third Friday off). The idea was for Nathan to help my brother with firewood. It was supposed to be wet/snowy on Fri and sunny/cloudy on Sat. They spent Fri morning outside doing wood, getting soaked, until the rain turned into freezing rain. We lost power in the afternoon; apparently the trees along the front of my parents' property are problematic pines that like to lean down on the hydro lines and catch on fire. Before the substation in the next town blew up (it was a great display -- my dad saw it when he was still a 15 min drive from town) we managed to get drinking water and pizza. My parents had plenty of candles and washing/flushing water available, and they have a back up woodstove that can be used when there is no power (the furnace will overheat when the electric fan isn't working). So we had a pretty cozy time of it. Nathan went out with my dad and brother on Sat to take a tree off someone's house. The power came back on early Sat evening.
